Web Conference to Feature Two-Day Accessibility Track

This year, the annual Web Conference at Penn State, to take place June 11-12, will feature a full track on how to make web content accessible to persons with disabilities. The accessibility track will feature presentations on a wide range of topics ranging from creating accessible web documents and conceptualizing a large-scale accessibility strategy to captioning how-tos and information on improving the accessibility of math and foreign language content.

New Pages: Guides for Captioning With MovieCaptioner and QuickTime

Two new pages related to video captioning have been added to the Accessibility and Usability Guide. "MovieCaptioner: Adding Captions to Videos" covers the basic methods of creating and exporting captions in MovieCaptioner, while "QuickTime: Adding Captions to Videos" covers the various types of captioning supported by QuickTime. Both pages come as part of the Accessibility Guide's recent focus on video captioning, with more content to come in the future.

VoiceThread Webinar Recording Available

A recording of the February webinar "Supporting All Learners With VoiceThread" is now available on voicethread.psu.edu. The webinar is led by Michelle Pacansky-Brock, who runs the blog TeachingWithoutWalls.com. Topics of discussion include VoiceThread's "roadmap to accessibility" and its soon-to-be-implemented captioning on demand service. View the webinar recording here.

New Pages: Guides on Captioned Content in Flowplayer and ITS Streaming

As part of the Accessibility and Usability Guide's push to provide more information related to video captioning, two new pages, "Flowplayer: Streaming Captioned Videos" and "ITS Streaming: Uploading Captioned Videos," have been posted. Both pages are step-by-step guides that instruct the reader on all aspects of each technology, from captioning videos, to embedding videos and captions (in the case of the Flowplayer guide), to uploading videos to the appropriate server (in the case of the ITS Streaming guide).

Baseline Accessibility Scans Initiated

The Accessible Information Technology Committee (AIT), on behalf of the Web Liaisons, will be conducting baseline scans of a sample of official Penn State websites. The Web Liaisons have advised AIT of the most important websites maintained by their unit.

The scans will be completed by February 15, the results of which will be made available to the Web Liaisons. The Web Liaisons will distribute information to their web staff for analysis and planning for remediation.
