Penn State is piloting a repository of syllabus templates in Microsoft Word which include key features to allow instructors to more easily creating an accessible syllabus easier for instructors to create an accessible syllabus document. In addition to the syllabus, the templates can be used for other documents.

About the Templates

The templates are fully editable Word files which include the following features:

  • Templates feature the Heading 1…Heading 6 styles in alternate fonts, sizes and text alignments.
  • The default tables show visible headers.
  • The selection of table cell color formats are adjusted so that there is sufficient color contrast between text and background.
  • An image of the Penn State shield with alt text is included.
  • Embedded instructions on how to use the template.

The goal of the templates is to provide flexible formatting options which still produce an accessible document for all viewers. While no Word template can guarantee accessibility, the goal is to make certain accessibility settings the default.

Join the Pilot

We are looking for interested instructors, instructional design staff and others to preview the templates and embedded instructions.

To participate in the pilot, you must

  • Agree to provide feedback through a set of 2-3 surveys throughout the pilot.
