This year Penn State is sponsoring streamed sessions from the Accessing Higher Ground accessibility conference in November. For those at the University Park campus, the following sessions will be hosted at the Outreach Building (Innovation Park) from November 20, 21, & 22.

There will be a wide variety of sessions covering topics such as document accessibility, laws, universal design for learning, EPUB, and audio description. All faculty and staff are welcome to attend any or all sessions free of charge.

There will be two conference tracks (A and B) running simultaneously in different rooms in the Outreach Building. Please view the detailed schedule for topics, times, and room locations.

Food and Drink Options

The Outreach building has a “snack shop” on the third floor where you can purchase soda, water, and various snack foods with cash. There is a vending machine on the first floor where you can buy bottled beverages with a card.

The nearby Penn Stater offers two options for lunch: Legends and the Gardens.

You are welcome to bring food with you to the sessions.

Parking

You may park in the Outreach Building parking lot if you have an Orange permit, or you can park in a metered space. There is additional free parking at the Penn Stater across the street. And if you want to take the bus, the building is on the Red Link bus line.

The lawsuit brought by National Federation of the Blind in 2010 was a rude wake up call for purchasing agents, developers, and content authors to pay attention to web accessibility standards. And we responded effectively. But the complaint by the Office of Civil Rights in 2017 exposed a “new” problem with our compliance process. Websites launched after NFB, and demonstrated to be fully compliant, suddenly were not! What happened? and how are we adjusting our quality assurance processes?

About the Session

In this session, Michelle McManus from TLT Accessibility demonstrates how a user with visual disabilities uses a screen reader to navigate a Web site and other digital content. Michelle and the rest of the TLT Accessibility team will review key WCAG 2.1 guidelines to make content more accessible including: image alt text, clear link text and heading structure, proper table structure, form and button labels, the need for keyboard functionality and how to convey information regardless of visual formatting. The team will also discuss how many of these guidelines improve SEO, usability and reduce code maintenance.

About the Session

Although many accessibility guidelines were developed to assist users with severe visual disabilities using a screen reader, other guidelines impact sighted users with mobility impairments, low vision or color deficient vision and users with cognitive differences.

Elizabeth Pyatt from the TLT Accessibility team will review WCAG 2.1 accessibility guidelines for color contrast, video captions and description, visual keyboard focus and reducing online distraction. The presentation will also show how following these guidelines will enhance the usability and design for all users.
